Up Our Road – FAQs

What is the Up Our Road project and exhibition?

Up Our Road is an oral history and photography exhibition which highlights the community champions of the areas closest to North Lincolnshire Museum with a personal or familial story of migration to the area.

Why are you doing the Up Our Road project and exhibition?

North Lincolnshire Museum has a lack of records and stories which relate to post mid-20th century migration in the North Lincolnshire Museums Collection. We hope to form connections with organisations and people who work to make the area a better place to tell their stories and add them to our collection.

What do you mean by story of migration?

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. There are a range of reasons why people migrate including for work, study, to be with family and to seek safety from war, natural or man-made disasters.

How do you decide who gets chosen to be in the exhibition?

We are working with project partners to select the participants. These organisations and groups represent and work with communities in the area and they will be making suggestions of people who may be interested in taking part in the project. People will then self-elect themselves to take part.

Do the people in the exhibition get paid?

The people who are telling their stories in the Up Our Road exhibition do not get paid. They do get to keep their oral histories and get digital copies of their photographs to keep.

As part of the project, we have contracted an oral historian who will be recording people’s stories. We have also contracted a photographer, who will be taking people’s photographs. These two professionals will be paid.

Who is funding the Up Our Road exhibition?

North Lincolnshire Museum is a Local Authority venue and part of North Lincolnshire Council. Together North Lincolnshire Museum and Normanby Hall Country Park are known as North Lincolnshire Museums.

North Lincolnshire Museums are a partner is the Humber Museums Partnership (HMP), along with Hull Museums & Gallery, East Riding of Yorkshire Museums and North East Lincolnshire Museums. As an Arts Council England (ACE) consortium National Portfolio Organisation, the Humber Museums Partnership receives additional grant funding to deliver exhibitions and engagement programmes across the Humber region. The Up Our Road exhibition has been made possible through this grant.
