Spotlight On… Archaeology and History Club
Happy Birthday to North Lincolnshire Museum’s Archaeology and History Club!
September 2025 marks the second anniversary of the group. Since our first session back in 2023, the group have met over twenty times. Together, we have developed new skills such as observational drawing, artefact conservation and record keeping. We have explored local history spanning millions of years, from the Jurassic Sea to the Romans, and stopped to think about how the things we do today will become the history of tomorrow. The group have handled artefacts from the Collection, designed new displays and conducted research in our galleries. We even took a trip to the brilliant National Videogame Museum in Sheffield. We are frequently inspired by what we see and handle to make our own creative interpretations. We were particularly proud of our Anglo-Saxon pots and pendants, so recently put together a display in our Community Gallery so visitors could enjoy them.
Some members of the Club attend every month, come rain or shine. Others pick the themes they’re interested in and join us just for those. We take a vote on topics we would like to cover, and our programme of sessions is based around this. This Autumn we will be looking at the Stone Age and Victorian Scunthorpe, as well the study of stratigraphy. We are looking forward to getting our hands dirty next year doing fieldwork in the grounds and contributing to new displays in the Museum.
We always like to see new faces and learn more about the interest of our club members. We currently have wannabe palaeontologist, military history enthusiasts and some members who just love treasure, especially the kind that shines! While these interests vary wildly, the whole group are united in their love all things history. More often than not, members also tend to be a bit of a collector, be that of fossils, pennies or just curiosities from their travels – a team of museum curators in the making! We often finish a session with a bit of show and tell, where we can talk about these collections, sharing our passion for history with like-minded people who want to know more.
If you are aged 8 to 12 years old and would like to be a part of the Club, you can book tickets following the link on the book tickets button:
