Museum Makers Choice – Air Raid Shelter

As part of the Dynamic Collections: Documenting Northern Lincolnshire’s History project, a team of volunteers have been documenting and researching the collections. Darren, as well as belonging to the Museum Makers programme, is a member of the Dynamic Collections project team. He was interested to learn more about air raid shelters, inspired by fond memories of having played in his grandmother’s Anderson shelter as a child.

On display in the People’s War Gallery can be found an Anderson shelter, which is a type of air raid shelter. Before it was donated to the museum it was used by a local family during the Second World War.

During the Second World War, Anderson shelters provided a space for families to go to when an air raid siren went off. They were erected in people’s gardens. The Anderson shelter on display belonged to a family who lived on Maple Tree Way in Scunthorpe.

In this video, Museum Maker Darren takes a closer look at the air raid shelter on display in the People’s War Gallery.
